I was tempted to include “Hills Like White Elephants” because of the number of people forced to read it to learn about dialogue (happily,
there are other options), but “The Killers,” while less often anthologized, is more influential overall, and gave us not only two full length film adaptations
and a Tarkovsky short but Tobias Wolff’s “Bullet in the Brain,” which I do think is a very good story to learn from, if not for dialogue, then for story-making.
